This academic year, Make Happen’s Routes to HE project has supported approximately 900 Year 12-13 students across 11 schools and colleges in Essex, helping young people feel more informed, confident, and ambitious about their futures.
As students approach key post-16 decisions, Routes to HE provides valuable space to explore the wide range of progression opportunities available, from university degrees to higher and degree apprenticeships. Through a structured four-stage programme, learners are supported to better understand their options, reflect on their personal goals, and develop the practical skills needed to take their next steps.
Throughout the programme, students engaged in interactive sessions designed to demystify higher education and the application process. A particular highlight has been supporting learners to understand the differences between university applications and apprenticeship recruitment, enabling them to approach each pathway with greater confidence and preparation.
The programme also offers flexibility through tailored extension workshops, allowing schools and colleges to select sessions most relevant to their learners’ needs. These workshops have helped students strengthen key skills such as application writing, interview preparation, and self-reflection.
Upon completion of the programme, schools and colleges could access £500 progression funding to support meaningful higher education and careers-related experiences. This year, many institutions used this funding to attend a UCAS Discovery Day at the University of Essex, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with a university and explore their options in a real-world setting.
By combining practical guidance, skills development, and enriching progression experiences, Routes to HE continues to inspire young people across Essex to explore their potential and take confident steps towards their future.
