Supporting service children in education – CPD event

Monday 28 February
3.30-5.30pm

Did you know that only 24% of service children participate in higher education, compared to 43% of the general population?

Service children are defined by the SCiP Alliance as ‘a person whose parent or carer serves in the Regular Armed Forces, or as a Reservist, or has done at any point during the first 25 years of that person’s life’.

Service children can experience disrupted schooling, less access to extra-curricular activities and challenges with the curriculum when transitioning between schools or colleges. The Thriving Lives Toolkit is a free evidence-based framework of seven principles to assess, develop and implement a support structure to best allow service children to thrive.

About us

This event is brought to you by Make Happen, Network for East Anglian Collaborative Outreach (neaco) and the SCiP Alliance.

Make Happen and neaco are Uni Connect partnerships, funded by the Office for Students. Uni Connect is a national network of hubs across England which offer impartial advice, guidance and activities on the benefits and realities of higher education in college and university. We believe everyone should be able to make informed and inspired choices about their future, whoever they are, wherever they’re from.  We work with local universities and colleges to inspire young people with the confidence to find a path to higher education which is right for them.

Make Happen is the Uni Connect partnership for Essex, based at the University of Essex. neaco is the Uni Connect partnership for Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, based at the University of Cambridge, and delivers the Take Your Place programme.

The Service Children’s Progression (SCiP) Alliance is a partnership of organisations focused on improving outcomes for children from military families. It is hosted by the University of Winchester and supported by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The SCiP Alliance brings together practitioners, researchers, policymakers and funders to build a stronger evidence-base, better policy, and enhanced support for Service children’s education and progression, placing their voices at the heart of all we do. The SCiP Alliance leads collaborative work to develop a robust evidence base, connect and support practitioners and influence the policy environment, working with young people with lived experience to develop responses.
