Project spotlight – Future Thinking

In partnership with the Humberside Outreach Programme (HOP), Make Happen has proudly launched Future Thinking in 2024-25 – a dynamic 6-week attainment-raising programme.

Targeting Year 9 students working at grade 4/5 boundary in English and Maths, Future Thinking equips students with the skills and mindset needed to succeed. Through a carefully structured programme focusing on metacognitive strategies, careers education, and higher education pathways, students are empowered to take ownership of their learning.

Key achievements so far:

  • 13 schools engaged with over 350 students taking part across the academic year.
  • Significant boosts in student confidence, motivation, and academic resilience.
  • Marked improvement in applied revision and organisational skills—especially for male students.
  • Notable impact on female students’ confidence and knowledge about their educational futures.

What makes Future Thinking unique?

  • Proven methodology, backed by research showing metacognitive strategies can boost progress by up to +7 months.
  • Tried and test model of activity as successfully piloted by HOP.
  • Strong alignment with Labour Market Information and higher education access.
  • Tailored support and scalable structure that allow for deep evaluation and future adaptation.

As we look ahead, we’re committed to refining the model even further. We’ll continue gathering feedback, exploring how to adapt the programme for specific underrepresented groups, and working closely with schools to extend the benefits beyond the classroom.
