Supporting Access to HE learners on their journey to university

The University of Essex Outreach team and Make Happen have joined forces in 2024-25 to deliver a transformative new programme tailored specifically for Access to HE learners. Designed to boost confidence, academic readiness, and motivation, this two-part initiative helped adult learners thrive as they prepared for the transition to higher education.

A Two-Part Approach for Maximum Impact

The programme began with academic workshops delivered by the university’s expert Academic Skills Tutors. These sessions focused on developing critical skills that are essential for success at university:

  • Critical Thinking & Research Skills: Helped learners understand what makes a strong researcher and how to apply analytical thinking to their academic work.
  • Metacognitive Strategies for Learning: Offered practical techniques to support self-motivation and independent learning.

The second part of the programme invited Access learners to the University of Essex, Colchester Campus, for a fully funded immersive visit, learners were welcomed into the university environment to experience a day designed to uplift and empower.

Highlights of the campus visit included:

  • A welcome session tackling imposter syndrome, delivered by Inclusive Futures, to help students recognise their place in higher education.
  • Stress-busting and motivation workshops led by Academic Skills Tutors, equipping learners with practical tools to manage workload and maintain momentum.
  • A networking lunch with current Adult Learner Student Ambassadors, offering real-world insight and friendly, relatable guidance on university life.

This programme didn’t just prepare learners academically, this programme nurtured self-belief, fostered meaningful connections, and brought to life the possibilities that higher education holds for adult learners.
