Aim
On 5th July 2023 Year 10 students from Colchester Academy, Southchurch High School and Woodlands School joined us for a full day event at Anglia Ruskin University, Chelmsford aimed at preparing them for the often-difficult transition from secondary school to Further Education. We hoped to develop students’ core skills, knowledge of FE, and their confidence to succeed in a new and potentially more challenging academic environment.
Programme
We began the day with an introductory talk welcoming students to the campus and guiding them through their post-16 options (you can find a version of that talk in our Make Happen Academy here or through the video below).
Each student was given a workbook for the day that helped them to identify their objectives for the day and what information they were hoping to learn. It also contained a quiz and scavenger hunt for the campus tours later that day, with links and QR codes at the end directing students to further support and information.
Students engaged in a carousel of different activities involving a tour of the campus, and sessions from MADE on note-taking and personal resilience.
Feedback
The feedback we’ve received for the day (full report below) is encouraging, particularly in the one area we were hoping to have the biggest impact: supporting students in in making informed choices about their future where we scored an average 4.03 out of 5. Overall, attending students found the day helpful and encouraging – and the feedback received from attending schools has been very positive.
Thank you to all of those schools and students that attended, as well as MADE Training and ARU for collaborating with us. We hope this event has helped participating students to make the next step in their academic journey a resounding success, and we’re looking forward to hosting similar events in the coming year.
